A former first-grade teacher in Montgomery County, Maryland, will spend over a decade in prison after prosecutors said she sold fentanyl and other drugs to a man just days before his death, according to federal attorneys in Maryland on Wednesday.

A federal judge in Greenbelt sentenced Sarah Magrid to roughly 12 years and seven months in prison after authorities learned in March 2024 that she sold fentanyl to a man found dead days later inside a drug abuse recovery shelter.

In July 2024, law enforcement also learned Magid had left her classroom at Charles Drew Elementary School in Silver Spring to sell drugs. More text messages from her phone indicated that she dealt drugs during work hours, according to federal attorneys.

Court documents showed a plea agreement was entered in January of this year.

Prosecutors argued that text messages linked Magid and the victim uncovered a transaction involving fentanyl pills that were pressed to look like oxycodone hydrochloride.

After the man died, Magid briefly texted the victim’s sister, who informed Magid about his death. Magid admitted to the victim’s sister that they met up, but denied her involvement.

In addition to the 151 months behind bars, a federal judge ordered Magid to pay just over $25,000 in restitution for the victim’s burial, officials said.
