Man charged after reportedly hitting victim in the head with umbrella

A man in Montgomery County was arrested after police said he reportedly hit someone in the head with an umbrella.

The Takoma Park Police Department said officers were first dispatched to a reported assault in the 1100 block of University Boulevard just after 11 p.m. on July 8.

Police said when they arrived, they obtained information from witnesses and gathered several people who matched the suspect description. As the investigation continued, they narrowed it down to one suspect: 39-year-old Julio Cesar Martinez Vasquez.

“During the investigation, the suspect stated that an argument with the victim escalated and that he struck the victim in the head with an umbrella after the victim allegedly displayed a knife,” TPPD said.

Detectives gathered evidence related to the incident.

The victim was taken to the hospital with severe head injuries, police said. The suspect was charged with 1st and 2nd degree assault.
