OCEAN CITY, MD. (WBFF) — An Ocean City teen has broken the state record for false albacore with a 28.2-pound catch that surpasses the previous record of 26 pounds set in July 2025.
False albacore, also known as the little tuna, are Atlantic Ocean fish similar to mackerel.
Cooper Clarke, 19, caught the fish July 3 while out fishing for bluefin tuna on his uncle’s boat, Baby Girl. They were fishing the Jackspot, an area 20-30 nautical miles off Ocean City. At first, he did not realize it was a record-breaking catch and initially planned to chop it up and use it for bait.
“We were like halfway back from the Jackspot, and I was like trying to look it up on my phone. I’m like, ‘You know what? I don’t know how big it is, but I mean it’s a pretty big false albacore,’” Clarke said.
