Rabid raccoon, fox confirmed in Harford County, officials warn residents

HARFORD COUNTY, Md. (WBFF) — A raccoon and a fox tested positive for rabies Tuesday in Harford County, prompting health officials to issue a warning for residents in the area.

On August 11, the Harford County Health Department received confirmation that both animals tested positive for rabies.

The raccoon was found in Havre De Grace near the 200 block of Cooley Mill Road while the fox was found in Forest Hill near the 700 block of Walters Mill Road, officials said.

Officials are urging anyone, including their pets, who may have been in contact with either animal to contact the Harford County Health Department at 410-877-2300.

Harford County health officials are urging residents to protect themselves and their pets by following these tips:

• Always keep your pets leashed when out for walks and closely monitor them in your backyard.
• All cats, dogs, and ferrets should remain up to date with their rabies vaccinations through their vet or local rabies vaccination clinic.
• Cover trash cans and do not leave pet food outside.
• Avoid feeding, petting, or interacting with any wildlife.
