OCEAN CITY, MD. (WBFF) — Ocean City spent the past two summers trying to solve a growing problem: beach canopies getting larger, staying unattended and sparking complaints about blocked access, obstructed lifeguard views and overcrowded stretches of sand.
Two months into a new enforcement pilot, town officials said they might have found the balance: thousands of warnings and conversations, but just one citation — and none for canopies.
Canopies had grown larger and more numerous, crowding the sand, blocking lifeguards’ sightlines and narrowing routes for emergency vehicles. But the town also depends on keeping millions of visitors happy, and officials worried that an aggressive crackdown could make a day at the beach feel less like a vacation.
“I think they’re doing a good job,” City Council President Matt James said. “I think they’ve hired the right people to carry out the mission.”
