Baltimore officials filed a lawsuit Wednesday against six companies that operate online casinos, alleging that they target young people and violate gaming laws.

The suit, filed in Baltimore Circuit Court, lists four overseas companies and two firms based in New York and Canada as defendants. It says they operate “illegal gambling enterprises” that skirt state and local gaming regulations and use “colorful, cartoonish” advertising on social media to market to young audiences.

Mayor Brandon Scott said Wednesday that the online casinos are “designed to be addictive, have minimal age verification and are not licensed in the state of Maryland.”

“We’re talking about foreign companies operating illegally in Baltimore and causing real harm to our residents,” he said.
