The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) closed its campus Thursday as part of an effort to reduce electricity usage during an extreme heat wave.

University officials said the temporary closure is intended to help stabilize the regional power grid as electricity usage reaches peak levels.

Maryland is currently under a State of Preparedness because of the dangerous heat conditions. The heat index is forecast to reach 110F.

According to UMB, reducing energy consumption could help prevent rolling blackouts and brownouts while supporting the region’s power needs, advancing the university’s sustainability goals, and lowering utility costs.

Energy reduction measures began Wednesday afternoon and will remain in effect through 7 a.m. Friday.

The university is asking those on campus to turn off lights and non-essential equipment, including coffee makers, microwaves and printers, and to minimize energy use wherever possible.

Research labs have also been instructed to halt volatile chemical operations, secure fume hoods, protect sensitive samples, postpone new trials, power down support equipment and keep doors closed.

Campus operations affected

Most in-person campus activities have been canceled for Thursday.

Students enrolled in Physician Assistant, Physical Therapy and Nursing programs will receive instructions from their instructors regarding labs and clinicals.

Virtual learning will continue as scheduled unless otherwise communicated, while all other on-campus classes and activities have been canceled unless moved online.

Employees approved for telework are expected to work their normal schedules remotely. Essential employees are still required to report to campus.

Employees who cannot report to work or telework must obtain approval from their supervisor to use leave.

Those who are not approved for telework and are not designated as essential employees will receive paid administrative leave.

Some services remain open

Several university facilities will remain open during the closure, including the Community Engagement Center and the Donaldson Brown Riverfront Event Center.

Administration and Finance employees can pick up paychecks from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the lobby of the Lexington Building.

Transportation services, including Safe Ride and the UMB Shuttle, will continue operating as normal.

Essential employees, along with University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) and Faculty Physicians Inc. parkers, are directed to use one of the university’s 24-hour parking garages.

University officials emphasized that UMB closure notices do not apply to UMMC or Faculty Physicians Inc. employees, who should follow guidance from their supervisors.

Heat safety reminders

The university is also urging students, faculty and staff to limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated and take frequent breaks in air-conditioned spaces if they must be outside.

Officials advised anyone experiencing symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke—including confusion, dizziness, nausea or changes in skin temperature—to call 911 immediately.

Cooling centers are available throughout Maryland for residents seeking relief from the extreme heat.
